Night time cria of course – at Kensmyth Alpaca, Clay Meadow

Alpaca give birth in the morning only apparently. Really? mine cannot have read that book!

last cria born to the herd at Cirencester was extremely late in the evening… note the shadows and the placenta under the tree waiting for me to pick it up!

no – Alpaca do not always birth in the morning or during the day for that matter

no – there is not a problem if they do this ie only a problem if they birth late – they birth when they want to

yes – you do need to protect the cria from the cold and the sun

yes – you do need to protect the cria and all Alpaca from fly strike

but look how fast they grow

well my Mum always says when my Blog goes quiet it is because something is “touch and go” and she knows I am working through the night and she is not wrong..

One of our mares finally decided to give birth but, as always, it was quite spectacular… retained placenta!

mare and foal doing well now but a very interesting uterine flushing in the early hours of August welcome to August!

thank goodness for mobile field shelters and an excellent VET
